In January 2008 Jameson reported that Joe Barnhill Jnr had a history of sex crimes and that at least one victim was a child. She said the victim was 7 or 8 and that her family went to police at the time and accused Joe Jnr. They say he was brought in for questioning at the time. Although there was never a prosecution it was all documented. After JonBenet’s murder the victim and her family again went to the police to report their concerns about Barnhill Jnr.

Joe Barnhill Snr was interviewed by Detectives Thomas and Gosage on December 31 but Joe Barnhill Jnr wasn't questioned until late January. Detectives Thomas and Gosage were reportedly rough with him until he assured them he and his wife Sandy were in Kansas on that Christmas night with friends.

The friends wouldn't back up the alibi and then Joe Jnr changed his alibi saying they spent all Christmas day at home, which was some way out of Boulder. Joe Jnr claimed had he lied to police initially because, he says, they didn't want Joe and Betty Barnhill to be upset that their son had not gone to visit them.

His DNA was tested and the results obtained January 30 1997. His DNA did not match the fingernails or the panties bloodstain

But that does not matter. Since it is likely that there were multiple intruders these results just rule him out as being the person she scratched and the person who orally assaulted her. Barnhill Jnr might 'just' have been an onlooker

How the investigation into him proceeded after his test results is unknown. However apparently he was still on the police suspect list as late as June 1998 as evidenced by Steve Thomas' statement during his depo on September 2001:

10 Q. Let's refer to it as the June

11 1998 VIP presentation so we know what we're

12 talking about. Did, in fact, the detectives

13 during that presentation present a long list

14 of suspects who had been considered and

15 dropped, including Randy Simons, Kevin

16 Rayburn, Bud Henderson, Linda Hoffman-Pugh,

17 Joe Barnhill and Chris Wolf?

18 A. I would certainly have to review

19 any notes and reports from the police files

20 on that, but that's not inconsistent with my

21 recollection.

.A neighbour reported seeing a man running from the scene on December 26. She said the man was tall and slender. She called the Peter Boyles show in Denver to report the sighting

Joe Barnhill Jnr's wife's family was living at Broomfield at the time of the murder and it is very likely that he and his wife were staying there at Christmas 1996. Broomfield is about halfway between Boulder and Denver on Highway 70.

A man fitting Barnhill's description was seen getting onto the last bus to leave the Boulder bus station at around 1:20 am on December 26 the night of the murder and he got off at a stop near Broomfield.

Barnhill Jnr was also friends with the boarder who lived in his the basement of his parent's Joe and Betty Barnhill who lived just across the street from the Ramseys.

The boarder was Glenn Meyer and it was he who knocked on the door of the Ramsey house during their party on December 23 with a very lame excuse as to why he had done so. Did he get the chance, after being invited in to join the party by John, of meeting up with certain other guests at the party at the request of Joe Barnhill Jnr? And was that the real reason for his visit?
